D1 heating oil and D2 gasoil are both middle distillates — cut from the same section of the crude barrel — but they're far from interchangeable. D1 is a lighter, lower-viscosity fuel designed for domestic and commercial heating. D2 is a heavier gasoil used in industrial boilers, marine engines, and off-road machinery. Buying the wrong one for your application means compliance problems, equipment damage, or both.

The fundamental differences

Both D1 and D2 are classified under the gasoil umbrella, but their physical properties and intended uses diverge significantly:

  • D1 (Heating Oil): Lighter distillate with lower viscosity and lower sulfur content. Primarily used for space heating in residential and commercial buildings. In the US, this is essentially #1 fuel oil. In Europe, it aligns with the lighter end of the gasoil spectrum.
  • D2 (Gasoil): Heavier distillate with higher viscosity, higher cetane, and broader industrial application — marine engines (DMA, DMX grades), off-road diesel equipment, power generation, and large industrial heating systems. Equivalent to #2 fuel oil in the US.

  • Higher cetane and density specs: D2 requires tighter refining and higher-quality crude feedstock.
  • Marine grade premiums: DMA and DMX grades (distillate marine gasoil) command additional premiums for low sulfur and compliance with IMO 2020/MARPOL Annex VI emission control areas (ECAs).
  • Seasonal demand patterns: D1 sees winter heating spikes in North America and Northern Europe, narrowing the spread in Q4–Q1.

Which product do you need?

  • Buy D1 if: You're supplying residential or commercial heating systems, especially in the Northeastern US or Northern Europe. Your customers need reliable cold-weather performance and low pour point.
  • Buy D2 if: You're running marine vessels, industrial boilers, off-road construction equipment, or backup power generators. You need higher cetane, tolerate slightly higher viscosity, and may require DMA/DMX marine certification.
  • Buy D2 DMA if: You're operating in Emission Control Areas (Baltic Sea, North Sea, North American ECA, US Caribbean ECA) where sulfur is capped at 0.10%.
