EN 590 Diesel

EN 590 Diesel Import Guide for Wholesalers: Spot Cargo Pricing

EN 590 is the European standard for ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) — maximum 10 ppm sulfur content, with tightly controlled cetane number, density, and distillation parameters. For wholesalers and fuel distributors importing EN 590 on spot cargo basis, understanding the pricing mechanics and procurement process is the difference between a profitable shipment and a costly mistake.

What drives EN 590 spot pricing

Spot cargo pricing for EN 590 diesel is benchmarked against several reference points, then adjusted for quality, location, and delivery terms:

  • ICE Gasoil futures: The primary global benchmark for diesel and gasoil pricing. Spot cargoes are typically quoted as a premium or discount to the front-month ICE Gasoil contract.
  • Platts CIF NWE / CIF Med assessments: Regional spot price assessments published daily by S&P Global Platts. Most European EN 590 cargoes reference Platts CIF NWE.
  • Argus European Products: Alternative pricing benchmark used by some traders, especially for Mediterranean and Black Sea cargoes.

A typical EN 590 spot quote looks like: "Platts CIF NWE + $18/MT, FOB Rotterdam, 30,000 MT, loading within 7–14 days." The premium (or discount) reflects current supply-demand dynamics, sulfur content, cold flow properties, and seller credibility.

Key specifications to verify before buying

Every EN 590 SCO (Soft Corporate Offer) should include a full specification sheet. These are the parameters that matter most:

  • Sulfur content: Maximum 10 mg/kg (10 ppm). Anything higher is not EN 590 — it's higher-sulfur gasoil sold under a misleading label.
  • Cetane number: Minimum 51.0. Lower cetane means poorer ignition quality and potential engine issues.
  • Density at 15°C: 820–845 kg/m³. Density outside this range affects fuel metering and combustion.
  • Cold filter plugging point (CFPP): Varies by season and region — summer grade CFPP is higher (less cold-resistant) than winter grade. Make sure the CFPP matches your delivery destination's climate.
  • Flash point: Minimum 55°C for safe handling and transport.
  • FAME content: Maximum 7% v/v (B7). Higher biodiesel blends require separate handling considerations.

The spot cargo procurement process

Importing EN 590 diesel on a spot basis follows a well-defined sequence:

  1. Inquiry and SCO: You submit a request for a specific volume and delivery window. Sellers respond with a Soft Corporate Offer containing price, specs, and proposed terms.
  2. Due diligence: Verify the seller's track record, request references, and confirm the product specification against your requirements. A reputable broker can handle this vetting for you.
  3. Negotiation: Price, delivery date, Incoterms (FOB, CIF, DES), and payment terms are finalized. Most spot cargoes use irrevocable LC (letter of credit) or TT (telegraphic transfer) with partial prepayment.
  4. Inspection: An independent surveyor (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas) tests the product at the loading port. Never skip this step — it's your only objective quality verification before funds move.
  5. Logistics and delivery: Shipping, customs clearance, and inland transport are coordinated. CIF terms put the logistics burden on the seller; FOB terms transfer responsibility at the loading port.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Unrealistic premiums: If a seller offers EN 590 at a $5/MT discount to Platts when the market is at +$20/MT, it's almost certainly not real product.
  • Missing spec sheets: Never engage a seller who won't provide a full EN 590 specification. "Standard EN 590" is not a specification.
  • Undisclosed intermediaries: Ask how many parties are between you and the title holder. Each layer adds cost and complexity.
  • No inspection clause: Always insist on independent quality and quantity inspection at load port. If the seller resists, walk away.

Spot EN 590 importing is profitable when you control the process. Know the specs, benchmark the price, vet the seller, and inspect the product. A direct broker can handle the middle three steps so you focus on the commercial decision.
