The choice between buying through a major trading house (Vitol, Glencore, Trafigura) and sourcing directly from refiners or alternative suppliers has significant implications for price, reliability, and contract flexibility.
The trading house model: convenience at a cost
Major trading houses dominate the global jet fuel market for a reason: they offer one-stop access to supply across multiple locations, handle logistics end-to-end, and absorb credit risk. For a large airline with dozens of lifting points, this convenience is valuable.
But convenience has a price tag:
- Wider spreads: Trading houses typically add $15–$35/MT to the refiner's netback price. On a 5,000 MT cargo, that's $75,000–$175,000 in additional cost.
- Opaque pricing: The spread is rarely disclosed. Buyers see a delivered price but don't know how much is product cost vs. intermediary margin.
- Minimum volume requirements: Many trading houses won't engage below 5,000–10,000 MT per lifting, shutting out smaller airlines and FBOs.
- Limited supplier choice: The trading house decides which refiner supply to allocate. You get what they have, not necessarily the best match for your spec or location.
The direct-sourcing alternative
Buying A1 jet fuel directly — either from a refiner or through a direct broker who connects you to verified supply without inserting themselves into the transaction — offers several advantages:
- Transparent pricing: You see the refiner's offer price and the broker's commission separately. No hidden spreads.
- Lower total cost: A direct broker's commission (0.5%–2%) is typically far less than the trading house spread, especially on larger volumes.
- Supplier flexibility: You can source from multiple refiners for different locations, optimizing for price and spec at each lifting point.
- Direct relationship: The commercial relationship is between you and the supplier. The broker facilitates the connection — they don't stand between you.
How A1 jet fuel spot pricing works
Spot jet fuel prices are benchmarked against regional assessments:
- Platts Jet CIF NWE: The primary benchmark for jet fuel cargoes in Europe, quoted as a differential to ICE Gasoil.
- Platts Jet FOB Med / CIF Med: Mediterranean pricing, often at a slight discount to NWE depending on supply dynamics.
- Platts Jet FOB Singapore / FOB AG: Middle East and Asia benchmarks, relevant for long-haul carriers with multiple lifting regions.
- USGC Jet 54 / USGC Jet 55: US Gulf Coast spot assessments for jet fuel and kerosene-type jet.
A direct offer might read: "Jet A-1, Platts CIF NWE + $25/MT, FOB Rotterdam, 5,000 MT, spec per AFQRJOS, loading within 10 days."
Specifications: what to check before signing
Jet A-1 is governed by several overlapping standards. Know which one your supplier is certifying against:
- AFQRJOS (Aviation Fuel Quality Requirements for Jointly Operated Systems): The most common international specification, combining the strictest parameters from ASTM D1655 and DEF STAN 91-091.
- ASTM D1655: The US standard for Jet A and Jet A-1. Jet A-1 requires freeze point ≤ -47°C.
- DEF STAN 91-091: The UK Ministry of Defence standard, often required for military and NATO-related supply.
Key parameters to verify on every SCO:
- Flash point: ≥ 38°C (safety-critical)
- Freeze point: ≤ -47°C (critical for high-altitude operations)
- Thermal stability (JFTOT): ΔP ≤ 25 mm Hg, tube rating < 3 (prevents fuel system deposits)
- Additives: Confirm whether FSII (anti-icing), CI/LI (corrosion inhibitor/lubricity improver), and SDA (static dissipator additive) are included — and at what concentration
Making the choice
For large airlines with complex multi-port operations, trading houses still serve a purpose. But for mid-market buyers — regional carriers, FBOs, charter operators, and fuel distributors — direct sourcing through a verified broker delivers better pricing, more control, and a direct relationship with the refiner. In today's competitive aviation market, that spread matters.
